As internet marketing experts Miromedia are often asked how to optimise all sorts of profiles and web pages. One of those we get asked about is optimising LinkedIn profiles. Its important to state early on that the ranking mechanisms LinkedIn use when you type in a search such as ‘SEO Specialist’ is extremely crude compared to the ranking algorithms of Google for example. This is a good thing if you are looking at optimising your LinkedIn profile, essentially its easier to manipulate.
Don’t believe me? When you type in ‘SEO’ into the ‘People’ search field look who comes up, Dario G. The secret to this relative unknowns astronomic ranking? Scroll down and take a look at the bottom of his profile.
Personally I think this is a bit silly but perhaps he gets business this way?
Here’s my top tips gathered from our team of internet marketing experts:
Complete your profile – Sounds obvious eh? You’d be amazed how many people don’t do it! LinkedIn have a great little wizard function that walks you through this. I would also advise you add your professional headline as this pops up in comments, emails etc.
Change you URL – Its a bit fiddly but well worth it. I have added in my name and a keyword I want to rank for for example. To see how to do this visit this page
Keep it interesting – A profile summary that is interesting and compelling will go a long way to opening the door to new business opportunities and new recruitment opportunities etc. It is also a really excellent place to include some juicy keywords. If you are an ‘Account Manager in Coventry’ check your Google Adwords traffic volumes, choose your key phrase and add it in. Here’s a quick guide to keyword mistakes to avoid I wrote a while back to help you.
Join LinkedIn Groups – I’m added to about 10 now and a lot of the emails I must admit I delete, but some are excellent. In fact there is great opportunity for business conversions here, plus your addition to these groups will appear in the search results. New friends and acquaintances means new possibilities for visibility. This is a quick and easy way to increase ranking.
Recommendations – Another great tip is to include recommendations. They expand the volume of content in your profile and again allow for the inclusion of keywords. Word of warning here is to use complimentary and well written recommendations. I have seen profiles with 20 or more, which is silly who is going to read all those right? Just include the good ones, from influential people.
