Top Google Trends for 2012

Ian HancockGeneral, Industry News

There’s only one month left of 2012 so I thought it would be interesting to provide a few fact and figures from Google Trends. All of the below results are for 2012 only, so they indicate what people have been searching for in the last 11 months.

Worldwide Web Search

  1. Facebook
  2. YouTube
  3. Google

No surprises here. The top three websites according to Alexa are also the most searched for. This is exactly the same as the top three search terms in the US.

Worldwide Web Search – Rising

  1. One Direction
  2. Pinterest
  3. Tumblr

Yes, you read it right – UK boy-band One Direction are the top rising search term, worldwide. They actually have a higher search index in the US, than in their home nation. They even had a pop-up store in Manhattan earlier this month.  Not bad when you consider their humble beginnings on the X-factor two years ago.

UK Web Search

  1. Facebook
  2. BBC
  3. YouTube

This is actually very reassuring – more people are looking for news, than for videos of people falling over and South Korean pop stars. No shock that Facebook takes the top spot.

UK Web Search – Rising

  1. Netflix
  2. Olympics
  3. Olympics 2012

It seems we like films/TV and the Olympics. Not the most exciting, or surprising news. However the number four rising term ‘POF’, as in Plenty of Fish (a free dating website), tells us that there are a lot of singles out there! Maybe that’s who is searching for Netflix as well.

US Web Search – Rising

  1. One Direction
  2. Instagram
  3. Olympics

Yes, the States love One Direction. They also love the Olympics, despite what failed presidential hopeful Mitt Romney had to say about the London Games (which everyone else loved, by the way).

Worldwide Image Search

  1. Wallpaper
  2. Girl
  3. Love

The first and second , I get. The third? Not so sure. People must like pictures of love?! Maybe they are curious as to what ‘love’ looks like. Or maybe they are a bit odd.

Worldwide Image Search – Rising

  1. Justin Bieber 2012
  2. One Direction
  3. Zayn Malik

Once again, 1D make an appearance. People just cant get enough of them, especially band member Zayn Malik apparently. Bieber, however, remains king of the tweens – ‘Belieb’, as his fans would say.

If you want to see more Google Trends, click here and enter a few terms. Its great fun and actually tell you a lot about society/what people like.
